ALICE LU The family of Alice Lu (Chen) announces her passing on Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at the age of 80 at her Winnipeg home. Although Alice's departure leaves us with profound sorrow, we rejoice that she is resting in the arms of God, delivered through her faith. Blessed with the abundant talents of a lifelong pianist and artist, the source of Alice's greatest joy was her family: her husband of 46 years, Dr. Lawrence Lu, and her children John (Caroline Fletcher-Lu), Laureen (Sheldon Haas), and Paul (Jennifer Lu). In the last five years Alice's granddaughters Grace and Olivia (Paul and Jennifer) brought her immeasurable happiness, pride, and fulfillment. Alice is survived also by siblings Doreen Chan, Theresa Chen-Louie, Larry Chen, and Agnes Foo. Born on February 28, 1928 in Shanghai, China, Alice travelled to the United States in 1954 to study music at Berea College in Kentucky and Boston University. She met her future husband Lawrence in California and on June 16, 1962 they married in Detroit. The couple then immigrated to Vancouver, BC where they started their family before settling in Winnipeg in 1967, where the family currently resides. Alice imparted her musical talent to nurture many piano students over the years and her artistry extended to related hobbies: sketching, painting, and photography. As a person who treated life as a continual growing experience she shared the fruits of her creativity through the Internet and email, having taught herself to use a computer in her 70s. As an artist Alice's eyes were always open to the beauty of our world. She leaves our world with her beauty imprinted on it in the form of music, art, and an everlasting influence on her family. Vigil will take place on Sunday, December 7, 7:00 p.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church; 847 St. Mary's Rd.; Winnipeg. The funeral will be held on Monday, December 8, 10:00 a.m. at the same location, followed by a reception in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, Alice would have been moved by donations to Siloam Mission; 300 Princess St.; Winnipeg.
Alice married Lawrence Lu.
